Tips

It is a fact that you can make even mediocre books way more fun by making them more interactive. Let’s go through some important tips from a Kindergarten teacher.

Delivery is very important

Read with enthusiasm, change your voice and volume, exaggerate, make funny voices, gestures, really get into character. Use lots of voice inflections, make your voice reflect the moods in the story and (if they get antsy), lower your voice to a loud whisper. Make an absolute fool out of myself. Kids will be fully engaged if you are!

Keep kids involved

Get the kids to be engaged in the book, get them to say repetitive phrases, ask them questions, get them to do actions with certain words, get them to help you sound out certain words or even turn the page for you!

Use props

Super hero capes, puppets using socks and gloves, relevant items etc. For instance, if a book is about rain, bring a misting bottle with water. But if you want to go crazy, dress up!

Use apps like Novel Effect

Novel Effect app has sounds that go along with books and it’s an extra special experience for the kids.

Avoid inappropriate books for their age

You should avoid lone stories like Dr Seuss for young kids. No matter what you do, it would be impossible to keep their attention.

If you would like to find a list of books to explain death, loss and grief to kids, read this post.

But remember, it’s not always about the book,

it’s also about the reader!

So just be creative and make it fun!
