The significance and role of aesthetic in learning and development

Aesthetic is a set of values relating to nature and the appreciation of beauty. There are various theories that support aesthetic development in young and older children. Research has shown that aesthetic learning environments is important even for babies! Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy movement on aesthetic development states that children need intellectual, creative, moral, and spiritual development. Since developing an aesthetic sense to children is important, let’s see how we can do it at our home just using toys!

Aesthetic toys

  • Night light

This bunny night light is so cute! It’s portable, battery operated (built in lithium battery) and non toxic. Moreover, this lovely cat night lamp has gotten great reviews! It’s squishy and portable. This 7 changing color night lamp is a good decoration on the desk, window or bedside in a nursery room.

  • Stacking toys

These stacking and teething toys are perfect for babies and toddlers. This set includes 6 soft blocks, 6 soft stacking rings and a koala and they come in beautiful earth colours like grey, haki and brown.

  • Rainbow stacking toys

These Wooden Rainbow Stacking Building Blocks encourage creative and imaginative play for years. You can find Rainbow Arch Stacking Nesting Puzzle Blocks in vintage style (e.g. burgundy, brown, orange and off white colours). In addition,. this Silicone Rainbow Stacking Toy in light blue and grey may match your kid’s room colours better.

  • Balancing stone rocks

Wooden Sorting Stacking Balancing Stone Rocks can be great aesthetic toys as well as open-ended toys! I’m sure you can find a set that will match perfectly the colours of the room that you have in mind. For instance, this set of wooden coloured stacking stones includes brighter colours.  As far as the skills that your child will practise and develop playing with these stones, logical thinking, dexterity, hand-eye coordination, creative thinking and problem solving skills are only a few of them.

  • Wooden blocks

I find these rainbow acrylic blocks and wooden blocks with water great, as they look nice and children can experiment with light, colours and shapes. A set of wooden blocks provides opportunities for children to pass hours constructing towers, castles, towns, and more! These wooden blocks look also nice as it includes a nice collection of a colored butterfly, diamond, feather, sea shells, little stone and artificial maple leaf! They include only two shapes (square and rectangle) and come in five colors (pink, yellow, blue, green, purple).  Moreover, this 128 pieces gem blocks set comes with 128 colorful geometric blocks of different shapes and a wooden tray for storing.

  • Magnetic tiles

I find magnetic tiles very aesthetic especially when you place them by the window. Magnetic tiles offer learning opportunities and, among other benefits, children learn about concepts related to magnets, maths, science and geometry. Coordination, thinking, math and creative skills are all essential for developing early brain connections. As children grow, you can buy more magnetic tiles for bigger creations and add slides and other features.

  • Ride on toys

It could be a ride-on deer, a cute bee or even a rabbit that your kids will love, but they will also make your kid’s room more cute!

  • Pretend play toys

They could be a dollhouse, a kitchen, a wooden garage or wooden vehicles. This is a beautiful wooden dollhouse and here you can get nice dollhouse furniture even for an old wooden crate! Also, this wooden town vehicles set looks great and children spend hours playing with vehicles for years. It comes in a sturdy wooden tray, which is great even for displaying it vertically on a shelf!

  • Play tent

This kids play tent is just adorable and a toy that will offer kids hours of fun play for years. The fabric is washable and the tent is made of 100% natural, non-toxic, uncolored cotton canvas. Play tents are, also, amazing spaces for self-regulation and quiet time.

  • Rainbow Peg Board and Pegs

Last but not least, rainbow peg board and pegs is a very different sensory toy! Even a small amount of natural or artificial light will create an illuminated ‘sensory canvas’ on which to can create endless patterns, designs, and images. The solid natural wood birch board slots into feet which allow it to be free-standing on a tabletop, floor, or shelf, but lay flat for storage, or to use horizontally on a light board. It includes 140 transparent solid acrylic pegs in seven bright colours that slide easily into the holes on the board. It’s perfect for developing eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. When the pegs are added to the board, a pixel effect happens, creating an opportunity to learn about visual design, pointillism in art, or the use of pixels to create digital images.  Further extend the play by recreating letters and numbers using the pegs on the board. Pegs can be added from both sides of the board, making this both a quiet sensory solo activity or one for pairs or groups. This beautiful toys is designed and manufactured by Mud Kitchen in Australia.

Last thoughts

Now I’m saying before you buy any of these toys, go to your child’s playroom and have a look around. Which are the toys that you would place on a shelf on their own and they would elevate the room’s style? Maybe you already have some, but you didn’t give them a chance or the space yet.

Make sure that you model how to look after toys, tidy up and display them nicely around the house. Also, you need to throw away toys that are broken and unsafe, if you are not able to fix them.

Apart from displaying aesthetic toys in your child’s environment, you can also foster creative development and aesthetic awareness in children using various strategies.

Some of them could be:

-Providing a rich and valued environment that is inviting and aesthetically pleasing.
-Displaying quality adult visual art.
-Creating aesthetically pleasing displays of children’s work.
-Modelling aesthetic awareness and creativity.

Either you are a new or an older parent, I’m sure your favourite aesthetic is not a room full of plastic toys.

But there is also no need to compromise on this.

Share with your friends your favourite aesthetic toys, when your child’s birthday is approaching.

You don’t need to receive gifts and toys that don’t match your aesthetic anymore.

Or instead of wasting money on various cheap toys, I would highly recommend buying high-quality aesthetic toys that your children will love as well!

In this way you will curate your aesthetic and avoid unnecessary clutter and mess in your house, while your child is still playing and learning in a beautiful environment.
